The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday invited applications for the position of team India’s new coach for the senior men’s team. The BCCI outlined specific qualities they seek in the ideal candidate. Notably, the candidate “must be willing to meet work expectations and pressures associated with handling marquee athletes”. Also, should help in “developing a world-class Indian cricket team which delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game.”

Application Deadline and Role Duration for Team India’s New Coach

The deadline for applications is May 27, a day after the IPL 2024 final. The term for the role of team India’s new coach begins in July 2024 and extends to December 31, 2027, which is the year of the next ODI World Cup.

Current Coach Rahul Dravid’s Tenure

Last week, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced that the Indian cricket board would soon be inviting applications for the head coach’s role. He added that the current men’s team head coach, Rahul Dravid, whose contract ends after the T20 World Cup in June, can re-apply. “Rahul Dravid’s tenure is till the World Cup. We will be inviting applications soon for the post of head coach, and if Dravid wants to re-apply, he can do it. We have decided the criteria. Thereafter, we will invite applications for support staff in consultation with the Cricket Advisory Committee. The coach’s tenure will be of three years,” Shah stated.

Dravid’s Coaching Journey

Dravid took over as head coach in November 2021 after India’s exit from the T20 World Cup. His initial contract with the men’s team ended following the ODI World Cup last year. Dravid has been unable to end India’s decade-long drought of ICC trophies, with the last piece of silverware being the 2013 Champions Trophy. India will return to action at the T20 World Cup, with their opening fixture against Ireland on June 5 in New York.
